The Discseel Procedure

Discseel® Procedure

The Discseel® Procedure is a minimally invasive treatment for chronic back and neck pain caused by torn or leaking spinal discs. At Dr. Lucien Alexandre's clinic in Coconut Grove, Miami, it is used to address herniated discs, degenerative disc disease and sciatica, particularly for patients whose previous treatments have not worked.

What is the Discseel® Procedure?

The Discseel procedure treats spinal discs that have torn or started to leak, which is a common source of chronic back pain that standard imaging often misses. Rather than removing or fusing the disc, a biologic fibrin sealant is injected to seal the tears and let the disc heal. It is performed through a needle, with no incision and no hardware.

Conditions Treated by the Discseel® Procedure

Many common spinal conditions can lead to chronic pain, including:

  • Degenerative Disc Disease: As we age, spinal discs undergo wear and tear, causing them to become thin and lose their cushioning ability. This can lead to pain, stiffness, and even herniation.
  • Herniated or Bulging Discs: These occur when the disc’s outer layer tears, allowing the gel-like inner material to leak out and irritate surrounding nerves.
  • Sciatica: Often caused by inflammation of the sciatic nerve, sciatica results from disc material pressing against the spinal nerves, causing sharp, radiating pain down the legs.
  • Annular Tears: Small tears in the outer layer of a disc (annulus fibrosus) can progress, leading to disc herniation, bulging, and degeneration. These tears are often the source of chronic back pain.

When a disc herniates, the outer layer has torn and inner material is pressing on nearby nerves. Discseel targets those tears directly, sealing them so the disc can heal rather than removing the damaged portion.

Are you a candidate for Discseel?

Discseel is generally considered for patients who have had back pain for months or years, who have been told fusion is the next step, who have had a discectomy that did not resolve the pain, or whose MRI looks better than their symptoms feel.

Not everyone is a candidate. A dedicated discogram is used to confirm which discs are actually leaking, so the treatment targets the real source rather than a guess.

How the Discseel® Procedure Works

The Discseel® Procedure uses Fibrin, a biologic substance that is naturally found in the body and plays a key role in wound healing. During the procedure, a small needle is used to inject Fibrin directly into the damaged discs. Once injected, Fibrin seals the annular tears and begins the healing process by stimulating the growth of healthy, new disc tissue.

The entire procedure typically takes less than one hour, and patients can walk the same day. Over the next 3 to 12 months, the disc tissue gradually regenerates, restoring the disc’s height and function.

Why Choose Discseel® Over Surgery?

Unlike traditional back surgeries like spinal fusion, which remove or permanently alter parts of the spine, the Discseel® Procedure offers a less invasive alternative that aims to heal the spine without the need for incisions or long recovery times.

  • Faster Recovery: With Discseel®, most patients can resume normal activities within a few days, compared to the lengthy recovery associated with spinal surgeries.
  • No Fusion or Hardware: Spinal fusion surgeries often require removing parts of the spine and fusing vertebrae together, which can limit mobility. In contrast, the Discseel® Procedure simply seals the damaged area, preserving the spine’s natural structure and function.
  • Reduced Risk of Complications: Traditional spine surgery carries risks such as infection, nerve damage, and the need for additional surgeries. Discseel® carries significantly fewer risks and complications.

Is the Discseel® Procedure Right for You?

The Discseel® Procedure is a great option for individuals who:

  • Suffer from chronic lower back or neck pain
  • Have been diagnosed with degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, or sciatica
  • Want to avoid surgery or have had previous spine surgeries that did not provide long-term relief
  • Are looking for a minimally invasive treatment with minimal downtime

What to Expect Before, During, and After the Procedure

Before:

During your initial consultation, Dr. Lucien Alexandre will assess your symptoms, review your medical history, and discuss any previous treatments you may have undergone. We’ll also perform diagnostic tests to confirm that the Discseel® Procedure is the right option for you.

During:

The procedure takes place in an outpatient setting, using mild sedation to ensure comfort. Dr. Alexandre will use an X-ray-guided technique to precisely inject Fibrin into the affected discs, sealing the annular tears.

After:

Recovery is quick, with most patients walking on the same day. You’ll be given instructions to gradually increase your activity over the next few weeks. As the discs heal, you should experience a reduction in pain and an improvement in function, typically within 3 to 6 months.

Frequently asked questions

Is Discseel an alternative to spinal fusion?

For many patients, yes. It aims to repair the disc rather than remove or immobilise it, so it preserves motion. Whether it is right for you depends on what your discs actually show.

How long is recovery?

Most people walk out the same day. Activity is limited for a few weeks while the sealant works, and improvement builds over several months as the disc heals.

Does insurance cover Discseel?

It is generally not covered and is paid out of pocket. We will be clear about cost before you commit.

How do you know which disc is the problem?

A discogram identifies which discs are torn and leaking, which is what makes the treatment targeted rather than a guess.
